Why Men Shouldn't Procrastinate When It Comes to their Health

by Vernon Foster

Most people would rather maintain an arm's length relationship with their doctor as they associate this individual with bad news. Men, in particular, tend to think that they are bullet-proof anyway and don't want to bother the doctor with any trivial issues. Yet there are many reasons why a man should schedule a regular check as they get older and why they should plan a visit to a medical clinic.

Prostate Checks

For example, men have an increased risk of developing prostate issues as they reach their middle age. They may be unwilling to get it checked as they feel that the traditional examination is too invasive and, to a degree, humiliating. While this is not a reason to stay away by itself, they may also be able to get a prostate-specific antigen test done instead, which is a non-invasive blood test and can give the doctor some specific indicators.

Colonoscopy

It's also important for men to schedule a colorectal examination after they reach the age of 50. Ideally, this should be done once every couple of years, and it can help to reveal any issues that could develop into something much worse. This is particularly important if you have somebody in your family who may have suffered from colon cancer. Remember, this is treatable if discovered early, and you should take action if you notice anything odd about your stool.

Skin Checks

It is also important to look for any signs of skin cancer, which is particularly prevalent in Australia. If you come across a mole that appears to be changing, has an unusual colour or features a ragged border, then this could be the early signs of a melanoma. Again, it is much better to check this out than to leave it, as this type of cancer can be particularly aggressive.

Blood Pressure

When was the last time that you had your blood pressure checked? This type of test is easy to perform and will not take up much of your time, but it can often reveal hidden conditions that may prompt the healthcare provider to schedule additional tests. The doctor may ask for blood and urine samples to go through a process of elimination, with the aim of avoiding the bigger issue.

These days there is no excuse for inaction, as you can schedule a visit to a healthcare clinic quite easily. Don't procrastinate any longer, because there is far too much at stake.

About Me

Dealing With Medical Emergencies and Conditions

Hello, my name is Peter and I live in Western Australia with my wife on our pet dogs. This is my blog which details how to deal with various medical emergencies and other conditions. Last year, several friends and members of my family suffered from various different kinds of medical problems. Some of them, such as my uncle had to be rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment that saved his life. Lots of my friends had minor problems which had a big impact on the quality of their lives. I take an active interest in first-aid and other medical matters so I decided to start this blog.
